Design, build, and test digital systems using transistor-transistor logic (TTL), SystemVerilog, and field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). i tried taking 385 once before and withdrew so prof cheng advised i take it over the summer - fewer labs overall & no final project but obvs the course is condensed. It’s never recommended to take ECE 391, 385, 374, or 411 at the same time (don’t have any 2 of those in the same semester if you can avoid it). But I feel like it’s easier MPs than ece 391, the ece 385 exams were always like wtf for me but with the curve it’s fine. Go to UIUC r/UIUC • by View community ranking In the Top 5% of largest communities on Reddit. I’d recommend finishing 210 and your other JRE classes prior to 385. If I were to take ECE 391 second semester, I feel like I'd be limiting my ability to take special interest courses, as I know I can't take as much of a courseload while taking ECE 391. ECE 391, alone. It has a final project. Also, I have taken differential equations before, but not linear algebra. I took ECE 220 this semester and really enjoyed it. Does anyone have any good easy tech electives that can be good with these classes ? I have already taken (ece 365, cs440, ece 398). Doesn't matter tho cause I still soloed the class and got an A+, if you don't find one getting a good grade still possible. Also it's better if you take it in the fall. ECE 438 - Communication Networks ECE 428 - Distributed systems CS 461 - Security 1 CS 446 - Machine Learning I haven’t been able to find too much feedback about these courses recently. didnt want to make another ece385 hate post to complain about the giant turd also called ece 385 so tacking onto this thread late. 385 takes a lot of time and 340 is also a hard class (it has an average gpa of 2. 65 votes, 22 comments. Give it the time and space it deserves so you can 1) learn the material and 2) understand what the rest of the ECE curriculum feels like difficulty-wise. If you are interested in architecture, taking ECE 411 together is also recommended. For 385 the grade is mostly from the labs which are quite time consuming but with a good partner they are not so bad. ECE 313 : Not too bad, it has, I think, 2 hws weekly and like 2 midterm and 1 final, so it shudnt be too bad. So to get an opinion from those that have been there/are going there: How’s the coursework? What have been the hardest classes in the ECE department? ECE 313 is mostly difficult because the exams are fast paced and heavily weighted, but like 374 the quantity of work is not that high. I don't know if this is an option for you or if it requires any face to face visits but ECE 385 is offered Summer 2023 with "Online Lecture" and "Online Lab". For reference, I took ECE 313, 314, 329, 385, CS 225. I spent a lot of time on CS 374 (more than 391 if you're willing to believe that) and still struggled with th material. The final project is fun, although if you’re taking 385 that may not be great to have both at the same time. 385 also starts out with circuit design labs, so you won’t get the benefit of the introduction to systemverilog until after the intro 411 mps Note that ECE 385, 391 and 374 are NOT equivalent to the other classes and should be treated as 400 level classes, in terms of workload. Start early and get help early are the 2 things you have to do to do well. That is, that you need to take it as a prerequisite to everything else but its definitely not a good representation of ECE, especially not of the CompE part. im taking it this summer - you can still have a lab partner. 385 will help you learn quartus and systemverilog, which you will need in 411. Students, Alumni, Faculty, and Townies are all welcome… This subreddit is for anyone/anything related to UIUC. Online office hours weren't too different from in-person. IMO, taking 411 and 385 together is a horrible idea, for two big reasons- ECE411 heavily uses systemverilog, which is a design language for hardware systems. I am currently in 391 and 342/343. We would like to show you a description here but the site won’t allow us. Good luck. Went through like 4 until throwing in the towel. Only 15 credits in total and you'll feel really good about yourself at the end of the semester. Don’t know how else to do so. I'm taking ECE 210, CS225, CS173 (with Fleck), and ECE 385 at the moment. I'd say I spent 3-5 hours a week on ECE 313, 10-15 on ECE 374, and 5-10 on ECE 385 except some final project weeks when it was closer to 20. EE’s probably have something similar. Is this possible with any of these courses, and which should I probably do if so. I would DEFINITELY take 385 before 391. Ece 385 and my electives (AI, parallel programming, etc. This semester will be very hard and time consuming which is why I needed to add a fun and easy gen-ed. Hey there, It’s a long shot, but is anyone in ECE385 looking for a partner for the final project? I’ve asked several TA’s and CA’s, and they told me that it’d probably be approved even if the project proposal deadline has passed so long as it happens in the next several days or so. Obviously don't try to take 2 of these courses during the same semester, but if you find half-decent partners (obviously don't try to solo any of these classes), the classes aren't too bad (will still take 5-15 hours per week (depending on the class and the week)) and at the end This subreddit is for anyone/anything related to UIUC. Most of the additional topics mentioned above were taught so poorly and incompletely at UIUC that all students will likely need to start back at square one to fully grasp the concepts anyway. option 3: ECE 385, ECE 313, ECE 408, gen ed option 4: ECE 385, ECE 313, ECE 374/391, gen ed I want to take both 391 as soon as possible because it unlocks virtually every ECE class, but I also want to take 374 because it gets me CS 421/426, but clearly taking both of them together along with 385 and 313 seems undoable. You'd have a voice chat with TAs on Discord and you'd share your screen with the TA during the call. You should join and listen to what he says. The 385 labs are long and monotonous, the slow, painful hardware debugging makes me want to scream, and writing the lab reports is pure, boring agony. Since I need a western and humanities & the arts, I found that Dance 100 and Rel 108 are good classes to take. Out of the 374, 391, 385, 411 combo (I assume you're ECE), 385+374 is going to be the most 'doable' but only if you have a good group/partners. You can move the soph fall gened or ece 210 (it’s a prereq for ece 310 (a popular class CompEs take for their ED req) and for circuits/semiconductors class) esp if you’re planning more on the code aspect less on the physics Town Hall for continuing students is Wednesday at 8pm CDT. One way or another it wont be as hard as 391 tho. I also got a B in ECE 313 and almost everyone I hear said that class was hard. ECE 470 (robotics) is a fun course if you prefer more math than raw coding, provided you know linear algebra. Not too difficult. ECE 385 had organizational issues in the past, but is getting better with Zuofu teaching. Also remember to take it together with ECE 385 to gain more confidence and CS 374 to learn some interesting theoretical stuff. It might be a minor for you but they'll teach it like you're a major, it's a weed out class for Comp E majors. The "correct" courses aren't the correct courses for everyone. CompE has 4 core hard classes (ece 391, 385, 374, 411) that you never want to take at the same time. Do NOT try to do 385 solo, find a good partner. I'm thinking of taking ECE 313 over the summer and leaving 385 for next spring, but I am curious about the input of people who have already taken 385 on what it would be like to take 385 over the summer (8 weeks), as I'm a bit skeptical about the concept given what I've heard about the class. Help your fellow Redditors crack the electrical code. It also has a final project. ECE 496 (Senior Thesis) ECE 444 (IC Theory & Fabrication) ECE 374 (Algos) I am trying to decide my last class for the sem. You also could take Math 213 instead of CS 173 2nd semester and take ECE 210, CS 225, Math 257, and Phys 213/214 (15 credits) 3rd semester with no additional courses and then with all of I started college as an EE but liked ECe 120/220 a lot more than ece 110/210 because I liked programming and logic more than circuits so I switched to CompE. You’ve probably heard of 391 that’s a fun class (20-40 hours a week on that alone during MP3) if you have good times management you can manage the workload plus 1-2 RSOs and maybe a few parties. ECE 408 (parallel programming) has kind of simple code, but the exams are a bit harsh. I know that the gpa average for ECE 313 is lower, but if I signed up for ECE 385 I would not know my partner. Although I imagine with corona the kinda buggy systems might’ve been even worse. If you are a ZJUI (or UIUC) students who are taking ECE 385, you should not copy anying from this file. This would be a good time to take ECE 385 to split up 385 and 391 (I would not recommend 391 since it's better to take that after CS 225) as well as ECE 313. There have been so many concerts about 385, not surprised if he is specifically invited to the panel to address 385 concerns. That combination isn’t unheard of but it certainly isn’t a walk in the park. I am currently debating taking ECE 385 without a known partner or ECE 313. My lab is from 9AM-12PM on wednesday. If you enjoy physics, ece 329 and 340 are good options. Their advice is to buy an entry level windows laptop (just for school work & run certain software application) that's below $500. That's a shame, I still have ECE 391, ECE 385, two electives, and ECE senior design (so 411 and 445) still left. I'd say it's as helpful as to figuring out you like math as taking algebra as a high schooler. The other classes keep but 329 is only useful for RF, 340 is only useful for cringe PD. Using GPA data from the most recent ten full semesters (Fall 2019 through Spring 2024, including summers/winters), we found the distribution of every section/instructor group within every course. Having been through the trenches of ECE 385 and 391 and so on, 9/10 times the stinky oily people are just being gross. The MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) is offered by the AAMC and is a required exam for admission to medical schools in the USA and Canada. I've heard the first 3 classes are challenging, but I wanted to take one more class because only 10 credit hrs seems too low. Also, you have to take 220 before 385. However, after consulting some of the juniors and seniors I realize it's nice to have a windows device for ECE 385 & later classes. Hi, I am taking ece 385 over the summer and still don't have a teammate. ECE 374, 385, and 391's difficulty is overrated (especially 385). The #1 social media platform for MCAT advice. It is the contents of all ECE 385 (Digital System Laboratory) weekly lab projects. I have taken all core classes except ece 385 and ece 374. I know several people who've taken both, and the general consensus is that as far as sheer workload goes, ECE 210 is far heavier - this is in part because doing the 'HW' isn't mandatory in ECE 313, and the lack of a lab portion (technically available as ECE 314, but I don't think it's the norm for everyone to take this). 82K subscribers in the UIUC community. (8 to 10 out of 10 difficulty, anywhere from 6 to 10 out of 10 time depending on your partner) ECE 329: difficult course, work isn’t super time consuming to do if you know what you’re doing but conceptually very hard with tough exams. Email invitations were sent last week and a reminder earlier today. He added on components that teach software/hardware interfacing, which is pretty important for ECE students. I don't have all the prerequisites for ECE 210 yet so I was considering taking ece 385 next semester. I've taken ECE 210, but not ECE 313. 385 is such a disorganized shit show, and if its relevant I got an A- in ece120 and have an A in cs233 currently. /r/MCAT is a place for MCAT practice, questions, discussion, advice, social networking, news, study tips and more. The general consensus tends to be that ECE 391 is the most time consuming course, though. ECE 385 is a fair bit of work but with a good partner it's not so bad if you're a fast worker. Move up your ECE classes earlier, you don't want to take ECE 391 your last semester. I generally was on the heavier course load side compared to most throughout my degree, so keep that in mind, but I thought this semester was very manageable, and would not say taking 225 and 385 together is a problem at all UNLESS you have a complete dead weight 385 partner, which could combine with worse affinity for hardware design This subreddit is for anyone/anything related to UIUC. The laboratory exercises are designed to give students ability to design, build, and debug digital systems. I took ece 385 a few years ago, I found it a loooot more manageable than ece 391. ECE 313 CS 225 ECE 385 ECE 470 or ECE 408 I'm quite certain about keeping the first 3 classes. However, since you should probably consider taking 311 with 310 and 343 with 342, I would say 343 is arguably even more involved in person than 385, since 385 seems to have more adapted to being online, while 343 was very much about building the circuits in person when I took it. Of the 300 level ece classes, 330 and 342 are the most useful since you learn more about circuits and power. I want to take some combination of 2 of these at once but don’t want to be flooded w/ too much work. Ece 330 is if you want to learn more about motors, power systems, and maybe clean energy. However due to 391, I sometimes not able to internalize 342 and have had to rely on others for carrying in the 342 homework. Good luck with soloing MP3. ECE 385 : it has weekly labs and lab reports due, and the first lab is really hard, and it also has a final project. Right now I am thinking between ECE 310, ECE 313, or ECE 385. 411 will be pretty tough since mp0 and mp1 and basically the same as lab 6 in 385. Contribute to AllenHeartcore/ECE385_UIUC23sp development by creating an account on GitHub. 225 and 385 take a good chunk of time combined, I would definitely take out either 470 or 310 - if you’re a weaker student, maybe even take out both. Given the lack of a regional subreddit, it also covers most things in the Champaign-Urbana area. This visualization is the second in a series of GPA visualizations created to explore the grades given by courses at The University of Illinois. Exams aren't bad as the content is pretty easy but the majority of the grade comes from labs. I wanted to take both of them this semester but I am confused about what to take it with. Take it with dragic, Lee, Goddard,or edens if they teach it. With a bad partner/ no partner you are looking at 20+ hours and that's optimistic. The stuff you learn in ECE 313 and 329 will get more useful when you start taking 361, 350, and any 400 level courses related to the material. ECE 385 is kinda similar to 391, but it is much easier imo. There is going to be a townhall at 8pm for ECE and Prof Zofu (prof teaching 385) will be there. I took ECE 385, ECE 340, ECE 313, plus a gen ed in the same semester and it was pretty difficult for me. At least in 391 exams, if you pay attention in lectures and ask lots of questions and study hard you'll do okay on the exams, but 411 exams for me were all like out of classroom discovery questions. (Co-work with Xiwei-Wang) It is only used for maintaining the codes for further reviewing. I watch lectures online anyway so this didnt feel any different. I'm pretty busy and do homework pretty much all the time but I can do all work and study and still sleep 10 hours a day if I don't slack off (take off days, etc. Tentatively I am thinking 385. Id say its managable. ECE 385 does a nice introduction to systemverilog (I honestly believe 385 should be a prerequisite, I don’t know why it’s not). More of a standard "class with a lab" vs the 385 "lab with a class". Does that mean you can take the entire class without any campus visits the entire summer, I don't know. 86K subscribers in the UIUC community. These are both much harder than either 385 or 411. Ziyuan Chen, ECE385 @ UIUC 23SP. ) made me get interested in hardware and I’m currently working in computer architecture. he said the final project is usually a grade boost as most people do well on it, so the summer can be more difficult in that regard. Students, Alumni, Faculty, and Townies are all welcome. I have gotten As in ece 120 and 220 so i feel confident on the material. I would not recommend taking it at the same time as ECE 385. Order is picked up in person Tuesday 1/21- Friday 1/31 — see details below. You can't go wrong with ece 385 and cs 225 for some programming and hardware maturity. ECE 385: tougher than 225 but can be less time consuming if your partner is good. Also, I've been told that the internships that are 'opened up' by ECE 385 are much more limited in scope than those relevant to ECE 391. I will be taking Math 286 the same semester if I choose to do this. 391 is just a very big time sync and has difficult exams. This semester 342 has been going relatively well for me as I have gotten 2 As and 1 B on the 3 exams. ECE 391 has a ton of work and a lot of debugging, but the algorithms you implement are not as complicated as 374. May 27, 2006 · Hey guys, I’m about to enter UIUC in the fall in the Electrical Engineering curriculum. I can tell you right now 329 and 340 are a waste of time unless you want to go into PD, which is long hours and a very stressful work-life balance. 313 and 210 are both at least somewhat challenging content wise (313 more so than 210) but their workloads are not too bad. ECE is an incredibly diverse field of study. 411 was my favorite class at UIUC and not at all too challenging. If you liked 120 then 385 will be easy and wont take up that much time, otherwise it will probably take a lot of time. Then you have all the time to do your final project. Also, ece 343 has lab reports which can take a bit of work. I wanna get at least one big scary ece class out of the way next summer, I will likely be working an internship as well. By that point you'll know if you are faster than average or not. In 385, you're going be writing a 10+ page report on the lab you just finished last week while working on the lab that's due this week while learning (in lectures) about the lab that is due next week so I have taken ECE 391, ECE 385, ECE 374, and even ECE 340, notorious ECE department courses but I feel like I am on the verge of failing 4 days into the semester ECE 411 MP1 was completely remote the first week, with school starting on Tuesday and the github repository was not working for a few days. How was your experience with ECE 385 online remote, is the learning similar to what on campus in terms of lab etc or it is not worth it to take it online ?
